It was exciting to hear that Mr Obasanjo had written his memoirs and was coming to London for the launch and signing of his book titled 'My Watch'.There was no way I was going to miss the event.Kudos to the Royal African Society for organising the wonderful evening.

The event started just minutes behind schedule and it was quite an honour to be in the presence of the man who had ruled Nigeria twice, most recently for me at the end of my medical school training.

I definitely noticed changes during his rule most notably for a 22-year-old was the almost sudden access to mobile phones,it was amazing for my social life.

Anyway, back to the event,I went with an agenda to ask questions about Health reforms and the measurable impact of changes made during his time in office.I also was keen to get a signed copy of his book which I hoped my children would eventually get to read too;what a privilege that would have been.He could not wait to sign any books which was a disappointment.

The room was packed,it was nice to see so many Nigerians and those who have interest in the progress of Nigeria in the room.I was lucky to get to ask my question about Health.Unfortunately,my question was not answered.I don't think it was intentional but I think such an important question about Health, knowing the data we have about health outcomes in Nigeria should have been highlighted by the chair.Again she did do her best given the excitement in the room.

During his administration,as part of the NEEDS (National Economic Empowerment Development Strategy),there were some inroads made in health however, quantifiable data is scant.

While life expectancy has increased in the last 50 years by about 15 years, healthy life expectancy (HALE) is 42 years.Amongst the top ten causes of death,we still have malaria, coronary heart disease and maternal conditions.

Not to be ignored,I went to speak with the organisers of the event and it was good to be able to have a mini debate with Professor Lisk who oversees the Obasanjo Health Foundation and also talk to Andrew Njenga.I am impressed that Mr Obasanjo is pursuing health advocacy and reform.

We all have a part to play in improving Health outcomes in Nigeria, from taking more personal care and responsibility for our health and knowing when to seek help,to the healthcare professional who continuously improves their knowledge to be able to provide high quality care.

I am committed to developing my part in shaping policy, developing clinically sound, evidence based strategy and advocating equitable and high quality Healthcare provision.

The former president no doubt has his heart in the right place. However, while the economy and the elections can be debated from now till kingdom come,we need a healthy populace to deliver the changes we so desperately crave.
